Satpura Jungle Retreat
ESCAPE TO THE WILD
Heard of the Satpura range, right ? Maybe for the first time in class four geography book? The Satpura national park established in the year 1981 derived its name from this range.Located in the Hoshangabad district ofMadhya Pradesh in India, it is part of the Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve. This vast dense forest is surrounded by the majestic hills of the Satpura range and is truly a paradise. Whether you want to go for some adventure or for wildlife photography or maybe just for some soul searching purpose, Satpura National Park is the perfect destination. The jungles of Satpura are lesser known to the world, hence most parts of the forest remain untouched by the tourists which is one of its best attributes. So don’t worry, no more waiting in queue for a safari jeep of an overcrowded wildlife sanctuary. Here not only can you do jeep safari but also elephant safari, boat safari as well as experience the forest on feet and spot a variety of animals, birds, insects and plants. Satpura is blessed with beautiful flora and fauna. The park is full of trees like Sal, Teak, Ebony, Mahua, Bel, Bamboos and has got variety of bushes, medicinalherbs and flowers. There are a large number of butterflies that can be spotted in the reserve. Satpura is home to a variety of birds both resident as well as migratory. It is a great space for bird watching birds as birds like the Indian Pitta, Pied Kingfishers, Orange-headed Thrush, Indian Roller, Nightjars, Brahminy Starling, Tickle’s Blue, Shelducks, and Great Cormorants etc. are often found here. The fauna of the reserve comprises of Leopards, Black Buck, Wild Dogs, Golden Jackals, Indian Bison (Gaur), and Porcupine, Chowsingha, Sloth Bear, Spotted Deer, Giant Malabar Squirrel and a lot more. But here comes the surprise and the best part, don’t go there expecting to see a tiger but you might just get really lucky and come across one because Satpura National Park is home to quite a few of those beasts.
The terrain of this national park is extremely rugged but it consists of fascinating deep valleys, sandstone peaks, narrow gorges, rivulets, waterfalls, thickly dense green forest and the vast Tawa reservoir. You will also spot the highest peak of Madhya Pradesh- Dhoopgarh, which has an elevation of 4,429 ft.
How to reach: If you want to travel by flight then there are two important nearby airports- Bhopal airport and Jabalpur airport. If you want to travel by train then the nearby railway stations are at Sohagpur (17 Kms), Hoshangabad (65kms), Itarsi (75kms) & Pipariya (42 Kms).
When was the last time that you woke up in nature’s lap hearing the music of the birds? Or went to sleep under a sky full of stars? Or when was the last time that your camera had pictures of real tigers and crocodiles? You don’t remember, right? Then maybe, it’s time for you to buy the tickets and travel to this paradise called Satpura National Park.
