Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal. It was India's capital under the British Raj from 1773–1911 and founded as an East India Company's trading post. Today it’s known for its grand and marvelous colonial architecture, fabulous art galleries and cultural festivals.

“Jana Gana Mana ” is the national anthem of our country, composed by Nobelist Rabindranath Tagore. It was first sung in Calcutta Session of the Indian National Congress on 27 December 1911.
The first newspaper in India, the Bengal Gazette started publishing from the town in 1780.
Earlier before partition by Britishers, it was larger in size than it is today. Many more states were merged into it like Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, etc. It was British India's largest province, encompassed Bengal, Bihar, parts of Chhattisgarh, Orissa, and Assam, With a population of 78.5 million.
The first Partition of Bengal (Bengali: বঙ্গভঙ্গ) was implemented under British Raj in 1905. The partition triggered radical nationalism. The partition separated the Muslim eastern areas from the Hindu western areas on 16 October 1905 after being announced on 19 July 1905 by the Viceroy of India, Lord Curzon.

Airways:-Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport is situated at Dumdum, which is about 17 kilometers far away from the guts of the town. This airport has excellent connectivity across major cities in India and abroad. From the airport, you'll take a taxi or a bus to your final destination.
Railways:-Kolkata has an efficient network of railways and is well linked to cities across the country. Superfast trains such as Rajdhani Express and Shatabdi Express connects to major and nearby cities. There are two major railway stations in the city – one is located in Howrah (Howrah junction) and the other at Sealdah (Sealdah railway station).
Roadways:-Kolkata is connected with most of the Indian cities by road. The National Highway number 2 and 6 connect the town with other cities and states in India. Kolkata features a broad network of state and personal buses. Calcutta Tramways Company (CTC) and West Bengal Surface Transport Corporation (WBSTC), The Calcutta State Transport Corporation (CSTC), run regulars bus service in the city. The Esplanade Terminus within the heart of the town is the main bus terminus.

Best Time to Visit :
The autumn and winter months between October and February are the best time to visit Kolkata, as the weather is perfect and festivities are aplenty. Summers are the least desirable options for a traveler, and monsoons, although lovely, isn't precisely the best season worth a visit.
