Situated along the foothills and nestled between the Himalayas, along the convergence of Ganga and Chandrabhaga River, Rishikesh (also called as Hrishikesh) is understood for its adventurous activities, popular cafes, ancient temples, and as the "Yoga Capital of the World" comes under the Dehradun district of Uttarakhand state.
In the past, the whole area (Garhwal) was famous as Kedarkhand which is mentioned within the Skanda Purana. As per the Skanda Purana, the word is known as Kubjamrak because here lord Vishnu seemed to Raibhya Rishi under the tree (mango). Rishikesh is the combination of two words Hrishik and esh. Hrishik means senses and esh means master or god. It means the god of senses.
With the growing of rafting industry and varied cafe spots and camping arising, Rishikesh has grown immensely as a favorite, catering to people with diversified needs.
This tranquil town has become extremely popular Over the years, because of the top spiritual destination within the world, especially after the Beatles association with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi here during late '60s. As it lies on the holy banks of river Ganga, Rishikesh has been a hub of Sadhus (saints) with numerous ashrams teaching spirituality, yoga, meditation and Ayurveda springing up, the most popular of which is that the Beatles Ashram.
With the influx of tourists, there has been a surge in the overall number of cafes and restaurants inside the town. However, since the last couple of years, Rishikesh has also been developed because it is the hub of Adventure Sports in India as there's a mess of options including White Water Foam Rafting, Bungee Jumping, Flying Fox, and Mountain Biking among others. It is also, as the gateway to many Himalayan treks and is employed as a well-liked campsite making it a gorgeous melange of spiritual and adrenaline-pumping experiences. Rishikesh also holds the International Yoga Festival within the first week of March which sees yoga enthusiasts from everywhere the world.
How to Reach :
Airways:- The nearest airport Jolly Grant is in Dehradun, 34kms away from Rishikesh. One can choose a flight to Dehradun via Delhi or Lucknow and reach Rishikesh via the regular buses and taxis available from the airport.
Railways:- The nearest railway station, Haridwar is 25 km from Rishikesh. Haridwar is well connected to major cities of the country via a variety of general and superfast trains. Roadways:- Take the buses or autos to move around the city. Otherwise, you can also walk on foot.

⦁ Ganga Aarti:-Every evening after the sunset the Holy Ganga Aarti is performed. The Ganga Aarti here is held at Parmarnath Niketan Ashram, it is a relaxed and not-hurried experience. Each and everyone performs the rituals in their own way. The Ganga aarti – performed on the banks of the river Ganga has been the subject of curiosity for many people abroad. As per the belief, lamps acquire the power of the deity.
⦁Ram Jhula:-Boat also available here on sharing basis to cross the river. It is Suspension bridge similar to the Lakshman Jhula between Sivananda Ashram and Swarg Ashram is known as Ram Jhula or Sivananda Jhula.
⦁Lakshman Jhula:-The place is also mentioned as a place where God Vishnu defeated the mighty demon Madhu. As per the Ramayana Lord Ram made hard penance for killing mighty demon Ravana. Lakshmana (Brother of Lord Rama) crossed the river by Jute Bridge which is popular as Lakshman Jhula.
⦁Neelkant Mahadev Temple:-Temple is also accessible by the trekking route and by road from Swarg Ashram. Temple Timings: 05 AM to 01 PM and 04 PM to 09 PM. Thousand of tourists visit this temple during Shivratri and Kanwar Mela. This temple is situated at 1325 meters height and 31 kms far from Rishikesh. Neelkant Mahadev is the Temple of Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva's throat became blue colored due to the poison consumed during the sea churning so he is known as a NeelKanth (Blue-throated) here.
⦁Bharat Mandir:-This is one of the oldest temples in Rishikesh, located in the center of the town and near the main market. The deity of the temple is Lord Vishnu. Bharat Mandir Temple. Temple has a small museum also.
⦁Jungle Vibes:- Here you can learn to make some musical instruments from Indian old men Mukesh Dhiman. Mukesh is specialized in Australian Didgeridoo and African Djembe.
⦁Triveni Ghat:- Near the main market, this ghat has an amazing view of rivers and mountains. The reason for the name is it's believed that this is often a conference of 03 rivers the Ganges, Yamuna and legendary Saraswati. Triveni Ghat is the biggest bathing ghat in Rishikesh.
⦁Parmarth Niketan Temple:-: Parmarth Niketan Ashram is located in the Swarg Ashram area. The Ashram has numerous rooms for devotees also as a tourist. Ashram has many religious statues inside. Parmarth Niketan is additionally host for the Internationa Yoga Festival per annum. An ashram is popular among the tourist for Yoga.
⦁The Beatles Ashram:- In February 1968 Beatle stayed here to learn yoga and meditation. After the Beatle's visit, Rishikesh came in limelight throughout the planet for yoga. Beatles Ashram is found within the Swarg Ashram this ashram is closed 1997 and consumed by the forest department. Still, there are some buildings like meditation cells and lecture halls are there as a witness of the glory of the ashram.
⦁Sivananda Ashram:- It is located near Ram Jhula. Sivananda Ashram is also known as the Divine Life Society. Sivananda Ashram has rooms for the guest. Sivanada Ashram was established by Swami Sivananda. Swami Sivanada lived here for quite 30 years. There are several activities performed by the Ashram like Yoga Meditation and hospital.
⦁Gita Bhavan:-This ashram has a large complex with discourse hall and more than 300 rooms which they are offering to tourists at a very low cost. There is a temple also inside the ashram.
⦁Swarg Ashram:-This place is well known for various famous ashrams, beautiful surroundings, healthy and divine living.
⦁Tera Manzil Temple:-As the name suggests Tera Manzil Temple has 13 floors. Temple is also known as Trayambakeshwar Temple, Trimbakeshwar Temple or Kailashanand Mission Trust. The view from the top of the temple is amazing.
⦁Other places to visit in Rishikesh:-Rishikund, Swarga Niwas Temple, Marine Drive, Rishikesh Main Market, Bhootnath Temple, Iscon Temple, Astha Path, Raghunath Temple, Chandreshwar Mahadev Temple, and Goa Beach.

September to June, when the weather is conducive for foam rafting, which is the prominent highlight of Rishikesh is the best time to visit this place.
