At a distance of 54 km from Satara, 123 km from Pune, 177 km from Kolhapur, 243 km from Mumbai, and 377 km from Panaji, Mahabaleshwar is a popular tourist places in India and a town in Satara district of Maharashtra. Present day Mahabaleshwar has come in to existence in the year 1829-30, when it became the summer capital of Bombay presidency during the British Raj. Earlier, it was known as Malcolm Peth and the first historical mention of Mahabaleshwar dates back to 1215 CE when the King Singhan of Devgiri visited Old Mahabaleshwar. He built a small temple and water tank at the source of the river Krishna. In the 16th century, the Maratha family of Chandarao ruled over the city. Later, in the 17th century, Jaoli and Mahabaleshwar were taken over by Shivaji Maharaj, who constructed the Pratapgarh Fort in 1656 CE. The city also witnessed the imprints of the British, who included the destination in the territory of the Raja of Satara in 1819.
Mahabaleshwar is the source of the Krishna River that flows across Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The legendary source of the river is a spout from the mouth of a statue of a cow in Panch Ganga Temple in Old Mahabaleshwar. Four other rivers also flow from here, before they merge into the Krishna; these are Koyana, Venna (Veni), Savitri and Gayatri.

Venna Lake

Rajapuri Caves

Pratapgad Fort

Tapola

Marjorie Point

Lodwick Point
If you ask the locals, they still call it Sydney Point. Lodwick Point got its new name from General Lodwick, the first British Army officer to reach this point. His son erected a memorial pole with the head of the General sculpted in marble.

Panch Ganga Temple

Krishnabai Temple

Bhushan Mahamuni
Also known as the Shri Kshetra, Bhushan Mahamuni is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It stands at the base of Swayambhu Shivling that is the meeting point of five prominent reservoirs – Krishna, Koyna, Venna, Gayatri and Savitri.
When coming here, you can also visit the Aati Baleshwar temple, also dedicated to Lord Shiva, and the Panchganga Temple, built at the convergence of the five rivers and believed to be 4500 years old. The golden idol of Lord Shiva in Bhushan Mahamuni is a sight to behold and attracts large numbers during the festival of Shivaratri.

Panchgani
Surrounded by the five hills of the Sahyadri mountain range, Panchgani was established as a summer resort and retirement home for British officers during the British Raj. Today it is one of the most popular hill stations in the country.

Kate's Point
Originally known as Nake Khind, Kate’s Point was named after the daughter of the then British governor Sir John Malcolm. Close to Lodwick Point and Elephant’s Head Point, Kate’s Point is situated at an altitude of 1290 m.
Amongst the popular Mahabaleshwar tourist places, this point is ideal for a view of the Dhom dam, peaks of Kamalgadh, Pandavgadh and Manadardeo, and the Sahyadri range. Move a little further and reach the Echo Point. As the name suggests, shout into the valley to hear your own echo. Strawberry farms are also major tourist attractions.

How to reach Mahableshwar & Panchgani
The airport closest to Mahabaleshwar is Pune Airport, situated at a distance of around 131 km from here. A number if carriers operate regular flights for Pune from Indian cities like Jaipur, Delhi, Begaluru and Nagpur, among others. After reaching the airport, one can avail of bus or taxi services to reach Mahabaleshwar. The Distance between Mahabaleshwar to Panchgani by road is 19KM. The aerial distance from Mahabaleshwar to Panchgani is 16KM.
By road:
Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) provides regular bus services from nearby cities such as Mumbai, Pune, Nasik, Panchgani, Satara and Kolhapur to Mahabaleshwar. One can also hire cabs or taxis from Mumbai and Pune to reach this beautiful hill station. Those driving from Mumbai can take Mumbai-Pune Expressway and NH 4 route to reach Mahabaleshwar. There are various Mumbai to Mahabaleshwar bus and Thane to Mahabaleshwar bus also available which takes around 9 to 10 hours.
By train:
Mahabaleshwar by train can be a little exasperating as the hill station doesn’t has a station of its own. Wathar railway station, located about 60 km away from Mahabaleshwar, is the closest railhead serving this lovely hill station. However, several trains run from Pune and Mumbai to Wathar. Another convenient option is Pune railway station, which enjoys excellent connectivity with the rest of the country. Buses and prepaid taxis are easily available from these railway stations for Mahabaleshwar.
