Bandhavgarh National Park
By

Bandhavgarh National park is one of the most famous national parks in India. It is far from civilization and located in the Vindhya Hills of the Umaria district in Madhya Pradesh. It is situated at 197 Km north-east of Jabalpur. It covers the area of 450 Sq Km, core area being 105 Sq Km. In 1968, the jungles of Bandhavgarh was declared as a national Park.

The name Bandhavgarh has been derived from an ancient fort in a hillock in the Vindhyan ranges of Umaria. It is believed that the fort was given as a gift by Lord Rama to his brother Lakshmana. “Bandhav” means brother and “Garh” means fort. Hence the name, Bandhavgarh. Bandhavgarh Hill is the highest hill among 32 hills with an altitude of 807m.

Bandhavgarh National Park is a land of tigers. It is home to the highest number of Royal Bengal tigers found in the world. Something to feel proud of, isn't' it? There are around 48 to 55 tigers in this park. You can easily spot a tiger in this place.

Bandhavgarh has a story of its own. It was once the hunting ground for the Royals – Maharajas and their guests. Do you know that this was the place, where the first white tiger was spotted by Maharaja Martand Singh of Rewa in 1951? He was captured, domesticated and was named “Mohan”.

Bandhavgarh National Park is rich with biodiversity. It has 37 species of mammals, 250 species of birds and 80 species of butterflies. On the tour in the dense forest, you can spot Tigers, Leopards, Deers, Nilgai, Striped Hyena, Chausingha, Chinkara, Langurs, Asiatic Jackal, Bengal Fox, Sloth Bear, Sambar, Gaur, Palm Squirrel, and many more wild animals. If you love wildlife photography, this is the best place for you to visit.

Bandhavgarh is also famous for bird watching. You can see many unusual and peculiar birds here like Egret, Adjutant, Black Kite, Egyptian Vulture, Indian Roller, Parakeet, Dove, White Breasted Kingfisher, Sarus Crane, and Grey Hornbill.

Bandhavgarh National Park includes 32 hills, plateaus, cliffs, and meadows. Bandhavgarh Park has mixed vegetation which includes tall grasslands to Sal forest. The flora is dry and deciduous type, you will find more of Sal and bamboo trees in the forest. There are around 300 species of flora in the fertile riverbank of the park. Some of them are Saj, Tendu, Dhaora, Palas, Amla, Jamun, Mango, Khajur, Babul, Banyan, Dhak, Kadam, Bamboo and many more.

Bandhavgarh National Park has 3 major zones – Tala, Magdi, and Khitauli. Among them, the most popular zone is Tala, because it is easy to spot a tiger in this region. Magdi Zone’s popularity is slowly increasing. Elephant shows are now organized in the Magdi Zone to increase the spotting of the big cats.

If you are thirsty for adventure, then exploring Bandhavgarh is a treat for you. Watching the tigers closely in their natural form will make you feel ‘awe’ and will revive a child in you.

Bandhavgarh is a historic place with mythological significance. It is mentioned in ancient texts such as the Narada Pancha Ratra and the Shiv Purana. As per the epic Ramayana, Lord Rama stayed in Bandhavgarh for a brief period while he was on his way back home, after defeating Ravana.

A fort was constructed here by two monkey architects for Lord Rama, which was later gifted to Lakshmana. The fort was called as Bandhavgarh (Brother’s Fort) and Lakshmana was Bandhavadhish (Lord of Bandhavgarh Fort). Bandhavgarh region got its name from this fort.

Later, Bandhavgarh Fort, situated at a height of 800 m above sea level, became the private property of the Maharajas of Rewas. Inscriptions that date back to 300 AD are still found on the walls of the Bandhavgarh Fort.

The region of Bandhavgarh was an important territory under many rulers, among which the most prominent ones were the Chandelas of Bundelkhand, the Mughals and the Lodis. It lost its political importance during the 17th century.

The region surrounding Bandhavgarh was covered by dense forests, which became a royal hunting reserve or ‘Shikargarh’ of the Rajas of Rewas. These forests were designated as a National Park in the year 1968 and Bandhavgarh National Park was relocated.

Apart from Royal Bengal tigers, sambar, chital, chinkara, barking deer, wild boar, leopard and sloth bears can also be found in this region. Along with the adjoining Panpatha Sanctuary, Bandhavgarh National Park was included under the Project Tiger Network in 1993.
