Best Resorts in Manali & Kufri: The Ultimate Himachal Travel Guide

The Ultimate Himachal Loop: A Professional Guide to Manali, Kufri, and Zirakpur

By Capt. Shekhar Gupta

There is a distinct kind of silence—one that you can only truly sense at an altitude of 7,000 feet—precisely at the moment when the sun begins to rise over the Dhauladhar mountain range. Last December, I decided to leave behind the hustle and bustle of life in Indore to savor the crisp, pine-scented air of the Himalayas. This journey took me through four distinct locations that, together, perfectly encapsulate the modern-day Himachal experience.

While most travel guides rely solely on stock photography, I firmly believe that you cannot truly "guide" someone until you have personally felt the chill of a marble balcony beneath your bare feet at 6:00 in the morning.

This was a contemplative journey, undertaken with the specific aim of understanding the delicate balance between solitude and accessibility in North India.

**The Journey Begins: From Chandigarh to Kufri**

After landing at Chandigarh Airport (IXC), the ascent from the plains to the mountain peaks begins. For those making the climb into the mountains, a pit stop along the way is absolutely essential.

**Recommended Stop:**

Hotel Raja and Restaurant (Jarol).

If you are looking for excellent non-vegetarian cuisine, impeccable service, and high standards of hygiene, this is the perfect place to pause and refuel before continuing your journey along the winding mountain roads to higher altitudes.

**1. The Wilderness Experience:

Jungle Mountain Retreat (Kufri)**

If you are looking to escape the noise and crowds of Shimla, Kufri is the ideal choice for you. My stay at the Jungle Mountain Retreat was a truly exceptional experience in solitude.

**The Experience:** Here, the pine forest literally brushes right up against your window. I spent my mornings gazing out at the mist-shrouded mountain peaks. "Pro" Tip: The word "Jungle" in the name isn't just for marketing—it’s the reality. The air here is significantly thinner and cleaner compared to the surrounding major cities.

Travel Advice: The ascent here is quite steep. Ensure that your driver is experienced in navigating the narrow roads leading into the Kufri jungle.

2. Valley Views:

Vivanta — The Sun Rise Resort (Manali)

Upon reaching Manali, I stayed at Vivanta. This property is designed specifically for photographers and those who appreciate grand, panoramic vistas.

The Experience: As the name suggests, the main attraction here is the sunrise. I captured the very first rays of the sun illuminating the Beas River Valley right from my own balcony.

"Pro" Tip: Unlike the crowded hotels on Mall Road, Vivanta offers magnificent, unobstructed views of the surrounding landscape. It is so peaceful here that you can even hear the rustling of the wind passing through the pine trees, yet it remains close enough to the city center to be reached in just 15 minutes.

3. Wellness Hub:

Sun Park Resort & Spa (Manali)

For a different kind of experience, I checked out Sun Park Resort & Spa to see what a blend of convenience and luxury feels like.

The Experience: After several days of traveling through the mountains, the spa-centric atmosphere here felt like a welcome change of pace.

"Pro" Tip: This serves as the "social hub" of the trip. If you wish to stay close to local markets and excellent amenities, this is the ideal spot for you. The transition from the rustic ambiance of Kufri to the impeccable service here is distinct and striking. 4. Transit Gateway:

Royal Park Resorts (Zirakpur)

The final leg of my Himachal journey concluded at Royal Park Resorts in Zirakpur.

Experience: Most travelers overlook the necessity of stopping in Zirakpur; however, making a stop here before catching a flight from Chandigarh is a strategically "essential" move.

"Pro" Tip: Use this stay to rest and de-stress. It perfectly bridges the gap between life in the mountains and the hustle and bustle of the city, ensuring that you arrive at the airport feeling refreshed rather than exhausted from the long journey down from the hills.

Ground-Level Comparison

Jungle Retreat (Kufri):

Best suited for those seeking absolute solitude, where crowds are minimal. It is the coldest location of the trip, perched atop a breezy mountain peak—and thanks to limited Wi-Fi connectivity, it is the perfect spot for a "digital detox."

Vivaan Sunrise (Manali):

Best for photography and for soaking in spectacular panoramic views. The crowd levels here are moderate, and for those who wish to stay constantly connected, reliable in-room Wi-Fi is available.

Sun Park Resort & Spa (Manali): Best for wellness and for easy access to the city center. It serves as a vibrant social hub, offering excellent Wi-Fi connectivity and an atmosphere that is both comfortable and climate-controlled.
