Bandhavgarh National park is one of the most famous national parks in India. It is far from civilization and located in the Vindhya Hills of the Umaria district in Madhya Pradesh. It is situated at 197 Km north-east of Jabalpur. It covers the area of 450 Sq Km, core area being 105 Sq Km. In 1968, the jungles of Bandhavgarh was declared as a national Park.
                                 

The name Bandhavgarh has been derived from an ancient fort in a hillock in the Vindhyan ranges of Umaria. It is believed that the fort was given as a gift by Lord Rama to his brother Lakshmana. “Bandhav” means brother and “Garh” means fort. Hence the name, Bandhavgarh. Bandhavgarh Hill is the highest hill among 32 hills with an altitude of 807m.

Bandhavgarh National Park is a land of tigers. It is home to the highest number of Royal Bengal tigers found in the world. Something to feel proud of, isn't' it? There are around 48 to 55 tigers in this park. You can easily spot a tiger in this place.


Bandhavgarh has a story of its own. It was once the hunting ground for the Royals – Maharajas and their guests. Do you know that this was the place, where the first white tiger was spotted by Maharaja Martand Singh of Rewa in 1951? He was captured, domesticated and was named “Mohan”.

Bandhavgarh National Park is rich with biodiversity. It has 37 species of mammals, 250 species of birds and 80 species of butterflies. On the tour in the dense forest, you can spot Tigers, Leopards, Deers, Nilgai, Striped Hyena, Chausingha, Chinkara, Langurs, Asiatic Jackal, Bengal Fox, Sloth Bear, Sambar, Gaur, Palm Squirrel, and many more wild animals. If you love wildlife photography, this is the best place for you to visit.

Bandhavgarh is also famous for bird watching. You can see many unusual and peculiar birds here like Egret, Adjutant, Black Kite, Egyptian Vulture, Indian Roller, Parakeet, Dove, White Breasted Kingfisher, Sarus Crane, and Grey Hornbill.

Bandhavgarh National Park includes 32 hills, plateaus, cliffs, and meadows. Bandhavgarh Park has mixed vegetation which includes tall grasslands to Sal forest. The flora is dry and deciduous type, you will find more of Sal and bamboo trees in the forest. There are around 300 species of flora in the fertile riverbank of the park. Some of them are Saj, Tendu, Dhaora, Palas, Amla, Jamun, Mango, Khajur, Babul, Banyan, Dhak, Kadam, Bamboo and many more.

Bandhavgarh National Park has 3 major zones – Tala, Magdi, and Khitauli. Among them, the most popular zone is Tala, because it is easy to spot a tiger in this region. Magdi Zone’s popularity is slowly increasing. Elephant shows are now organized in the Magdi Zone to increase the spotting of the big cats.

BANDHAVGARH SAFARI

Bandhavgarh National Park is closed in the monsoon season from 1st July to 15th October. The mystic and captivating jungles of Bandhavgarh can be witnessed from Elephant Safari and Jeep Safari.

Elephant Safari is conducted only in the mornings. It is on a first come first serve basis and charge around 500Rs per head. Only 4 tourists are allowed on an elephant along with Mahout and a naturalist on a trip.

Jeep Safari is open from morning till evening. The visitors are always accompanied by a guide from the forest department on the Jeep inside the dense forest. Each Jeep allows only 6 tourists other than a driver and a naturalist.

There are 4 different locations from where the visitors can enjoy a jeep safari. They are Tala Zone, Magadhi Zone, Khitauli Zone, and Panpatha Zone. The tourists can take a glimpse of the wild animals and breathe the freshest air in the jungle on these jeep trips. The entry and exit time for these park changes as per the season. The number of Vehicles which can enter the park during each shift is 25 for Tala Zone, 66 for Magadhi Zone, 35 for Khitauli Zone and 35 for Panpatha Zone also.

Bandhavgarh Safari Winter Timings:
6:00 – 11:00 am (5 Hours) and 3:00 – 6:00 pm (3 Hours)
Bandhavgarh Safari Summer Timings:
5:30 – 10:30 am (5 Hours) and 3:30 – 6:30 pm (3 Hours)

Note: The Evening Safari shift remains closed on every Wednesday. Also on Holi (celebrated in March), both the safari shifts remain closed.

Any Identity Proof – Passport, Driving License, Aadhar Card, PAN card or Voter ID. At the time of visiting the national park, Visitors are required to carry the same ID proof in original.

Best time to visit:
Bandhavgarh is open for visitors from 15th October till 30th June. It is advisable to visit this place in winters from October to March when the weather is pleasant. During this time, the temperature remains between 12 – 20 degrees. At night, it becomes cold, so don’t forget to bring warm clothes.

How to reach:
Jabalpur City is the closest city to Bandhavgarh. If you wish to come here, Jabalpur Airport is the best option. The airport connects to the major cities of India.

If you are coming from Indian Railways, you can hop off at Katni railway junction (100km), Umaria (40 km) or Jabalpur (180 km) away from Bandhavgarh National Park.

The National Park also has good road connectivity. MP state transport operates buses from many places like Satna, Rewa, Katni, and Umaria. If you take a cab from Khajuraho to Bandhavgarh, you can have a glimpse of the Ken river and crocodile sanctuary, making your trip memorable. Bus Journey from Jabalpur will directly take you to the Tala Zone entrance of the Park.

OTHER ATTRACTIONS IN BANDHAVGARH

Other than spotting wild animals on a wildlife safari, there are many attractions in Bandhavgarh. You can visit the Bandhavgarh Fort, which is believed to be 2000 years old. It is said that this ancient fort was built by Lord Rama during his stay in the jungle while returning from Lanka. Later he gifted it to his brother Lakshmana. Another tourist attraction here is Climber’s Point. From this place, you can witness the entire national park covered with Sal and bamboo trees. Baghel Museum can also be visited to see the ancient hunting equipment used by Maharajas. It showcases all the personal belongings of the Maharaja of Rewa. If you are in a mood to enjoy a picnic, then you can visit Cheshpur Waterfalls in river Johila, it is 50 kms from Bandhavgarh.
