SATPURA NATIONAL PARK
Satpura means hundered mountains.
It was established in the year 1983 (it is also the year when India won the World Cup for the 1st time).
It is situated in Hoshangabad district of Madhaya Pradesh.
It is part of the larger Satpura Mica Landscapes.
Their are 03 entrances for Satpura National Park visit. First is close to Pachmarhi hill station. Second and popular one is from Madhai Entrance gate which is about 100kms from Pachmarhi close to Sarangpur village. Madhai Entranct Gate is about 19kms inside from Pipariya-Hoshangabad road. Diversion for Madhai is close to Sohagpur town. Third entrance is for those who are staying in MP Tourism: Tawa Resort located on Tawa Dam.
It covered an area of more than 525sq km.
Biggest tiger reserve in Central India, but less commercialized.
It is included in tiger project in 2000 (only 6 national parks are included in tiger project).
Naturalists love it for it's flora and fauna both.
Satpura is also called Rudyard Kipling's country. Has inspired characters for Mowgli story like Baloo, Baghera, Sher Khan etc.
Most importantly Barahsingha (critically endangered species) are relocated here from Kanha National Park.
On the north side Denwa River (it's like border between Buffer and Core Area) and in the west side Tawa River then they join an flow into Narmada River.
Sonbhadra River- Tiger awaits is the bushes for their prey here.
Jeep safaris, canoeing, walking safaris and mobile camping can be enjoyed by the tourists at Satpura.
History comes alive through beautiful paintings at rock shelters of satpura.
During Rainy Season, boats are needed to cross it which is full of crocodiles.
Satpura National Park is rich in biodiversity. The animals here include leopard, sambar, chital, Indian muntjac, nilgai, four-horned antelope, Chinkara, wild boar, bear, black buck, fox, porcupine, flying squirrel, mouse deer, and Indian giant squirrel.
There are a variety of birds. Hornbills and peafowl are common birds found here.
The flora consists of mainly sal, teak, tendu, Phyllanthus emblica, mahua, bel, bamboo, and grasses and medicinal plants.
HOW TO REACH
The nearest town to the national park is Pachmarhi and the nearest rail-head is Piparia 55 kilometres (34 min) away. The state capital Bhopal is 210 kilometres (130 mi) away.
Airways:- The nearest airport is in Bhopal, about 190 km away.
Roadways:-The reserve is near to Pachmarhi hill station, which is easily accessible via road from the major cities like Jabalpur, Narsinghpur, Chindwara, Bhopal, and Nagpur through cabs, buses etc.
Railways:-The railway station is at Itarsi, about 50 km away, is the biggest railway junction of Central India
PLACES TO VISIT
⦁ Panchmarhi(Queen of Satpura)
⦁ Dhupgarh - Highest peak of Madhya Pradesh about height of 1350m. The whole thing is there are two points at Dhupgarh, one is called sunrise point, another is called sunset point.
⦁ Gupt Mhadev Temple-Gupt Mahadev is quite an interesting and mysterious spot near Pachmarhi , to reach the centre of the Shiva shrine where the lingam is worshipped.
⦁ Bison Loge Meseum:-Bison Lodge is the oldest house in the town of Pachmarhi that was constructed in 1862. This house serves as a museum, which is dedicated to Captain Forsyth
⦁ Chauragarh:-Out of the many places in Pachmarhi, Chauragarh is considered to be one of the most sacred spots belonging to Lord Shiva. hauragrh is the second highest peak of Pachmarhi region which lies in the Satpura .
⦁ Apsara Vihar:-Deep inside the jungle of Pachmarhi, Apsara Vihar is a lovely, serene waterfall, cascading from 30 feet height and forming a pool of cold water below.Apsara Vihar is naturally fashioned pool with a lovely and small waterfall. Fondly referred to as Fairy Pool.
⦁ Handi Khoh:-One of the most beautiful ravines in Central India, Handi Khoh has a 300 feet high precipice in the middle of a dense forest. Also known as Suicide Point, Handi Khoh is a viewpoint on the lip of 100m-deep, densely forested canyon, with Chauragarh visible in the distance.
⦁ Rajat Pratap:-The Rajat Prapat is a waterfall in Hoshangabad district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. It is the 30th highest waterfall in India.
⦁ Bee Falls:-Among the many small and big waterfalls in Pachmarhi, Bee Falls is the most popular one which provides drinking water to the entire city.
⦁ Shri Panch Pandav Cage:-Five ancient caves carved out of a low hillock are known as the Pandav Caves Panchmarhi In India. The very name of Pachmarhi is derived from these Panch- Marhi (five caves or huts) believed to be the abode of the Pandava brothers from the epic 'Mahabharata'.
