Konark, Bhubaneswar, and Puri together form the Swarna Tribhuja (Golden Triangle) of Odisha tourism. Konark holds an important place in the golden triangle. It is a medium town in Odisha which lies on the eastern coast by the Bay of Bengal, about 60 kms from Bhubaneswar city.

This place is famous for its magnificent and architectural brilliant Sun Temple built in the 13th century. It derives the name Konark from two Sanskrit words Kona (corner or angle) and Arka (the Sun). It is the masterpiece of Kalinga architecture in Odisha and is also known as Black Pagoda as it is built in black granite and red sandstone (khandolite). The ancient sailors used this temple for their navigation. The Sun temple was built by the popular king Narasimhadeva I from the Ganga dynasty. This temple is a World Heritage Site, chosen by UNESCO.
Rabindranath Tagore once wrote about Konark: “Here the language of stone surpasses the language of man,”
The Sun temple is dedicated to the Sun God “Surya” and is designed as a gigantic 100 ft high chariot, which has 12 pairs of crafted wheels and pulled by seven horses. As per the Hindu belief, God Surya rises in the east and travels across the sky in a chariot, driven by seven horses.
The 7 horses depict the 7 days of the week. The 12 pairs of wheels represent 12 months of the Hindu calendar. Each wheel is about 12 feet in diameter with 8 spokes. The 8 spokes depict the day-cycle. The architecture of this wheel and the entire temple defines time. Imagine, in the 13th century, we could know the approximate time just by observing the rays of the sun. Interesting, isn’t it?
The first rays of the sun lights up the entrance of the temple. The three images of Sun God are positioned at three different sides of the temple to catch the rays of the sun at different time zones like morning, noon and evening. Wow, what an imagination!
The main temple was originally 230 ft high, but it got ruined with time. The reason behind the destruction is unclear and still a mystery. Only the audience hall (Jagamohana or Mandapa) of 128 ft high, and some portions of the dining hall (Bhoga-Mandap) and dance hall (Nata Mandir) still survives.
Though a significant portion of the temple is ruined, it still reflects the genius mind of architects who imagined and constructed it. The 33.8 ft tall Aruna Sthambha (Sun Pillar) was shifted to the Jagannatha Puri temple during the late 18th century.
The Sun temple is unique in terms of its architectural setup and use of various magnets. There is an iron plate between every two pieces of stone. It is said that the statue of Sun God is made of iron content and floats in the air because of the top magnet, bottom magnet, and magnets around the walls of the temple. Hmm… something to witness for sure!
The main temple and the statue of Sun God are aligned in such a manner that the first ray of sunlight would cross the entire Dancing Hall (Nata Mandir), fall and reflect from the attractive diamond which is placed beautifully on the crown of the Sun God. Really? Visit the temple to know it better.
There was a lodestone, about a 52-ton magnet at the top of the main temple. The magnetic effect of the huge lodestone was so strong that is used to disturb the compasses of the ships which passed by the coast, eventually making navigation difficult for the sailors. It is believed that to avoid this, some sailors destroyed the main temple to remove the lodestone.
The walls and the roof of the temple have beautiful and intricate carvings of Hindu gods, animals, birds, aquatic creatures, images from daily life and much more. You can also observe some erotic sculptures on the second level of temple structure and some sensuous poses from Kama Sutra carved on the walls.
The upper levels and terrace of the temple have amazing works of arts, like images of Hindu deities Durga killing the buffalo demon, Vishnu in Jagannatha form and Shiva as a linga. The entire temple is surrounded by geometrical patterns amazingly carved on the walls. Two giant Lion sculptures guard the entrance. It shows them in the act of crushing an elephant who has engulfed a human body.
The entire temple has so many enthralling stories, mysteries, and myths that you will have a captivating experience and you won’t like to leave the place.
There are many subsidiary shrines that can be visited around the main temple, such as:
Mayadevi Temple
It is located on the west side of the main temple. It was discovered between 1900 and 1910 and is considered being older than the main temple built in the 11th century. It is dedicated to Mayadevi, Surya’s wife, but some consider it was also a Surya temple. This temple also has intricate and fascinating carvings. The sanctum of the temple has an idol of Nataraja, and its interiors have idols of Agni, Vishnu, Vayu, Varuna, and Surya.
Natya Mandir (Dancing Hall)
It is situated at the entrance of the temple. Here the dancers performed in homage to the Sun god. It stands on a high carved platform.

Vaishnava Temple
It is situated in the south-west of the Mayadevi temple. It was discovered in 1956. In its sanctum, it has sculptures of Varaha, Balarama, and Vamana-Trivikrama, confirming it as a Vaishnavite temple. The 16th-century scholar – Krishna Chaitanya visited this temple and prayed in the premises.
Bhoga Mandapa (Dining Hall)
It was also discovered in the 1950s. It has cisterns to store water, a cooking floor, many ovens (chulahs) for cooking. It is believed to be used during festivals or for community feeding.
