Gwalior, the fourth largest city in the state of Madhya Pradesh, owes its fame to the fort, situated atop a 300 feet hill, which the Mughal emperor Babur called "Moti among the fort of Hind". Gwalior is also known as the cultural center and home of the famous poet and musician Tansen and a renowned gharana or school of classical Hindustani music.

There is a legend about the origin of the name of Gwalior. It is said that Suraj Sen, the 13th-century prince of the Rajput Sikarwar clan, was cured of leprosy by sage Gwalipa. To thank the sage, the prince named a new city after him.
For centuries, Gwalior was the capital of many dynasties. In 1231 a Muslim army invaded Gwalior and the city remained under Muslim domination until the next century. In 1375, it fell to Raja Vir Singh and the Tomar dynasty.

This was the golden age of Gwalior. In 1516, the city was conquered again, this time by the Delhi Sultanate under the Lodi dynasty. The Mughals retook the city during Babur's reign and kept it until the 1730s, when the Marathas of Ranoji Scindia seized it. Gwalior remained a princely state during the British rule.
The present Maharaja, Madhav Rao, is a descendant of the Scindia dynasty.
This rich history has left Gwalior with a rich cultural and architectural heritage. The city has produced poets and musicians such as Tansen, some of which ragas are still considered among the greatest works of Indian classical music.

● Tansen Music Festival

This cultural festival is dedicated to the great Tansen, the pillar of Indian classical music. The place where this great musician is buried in Gwalior, Tansen Tomb, is the venue of the annual concert held in November - December.

Gwalior is the place that has retained the rich classical tradition of music and devotion to Tansen, known as Gwalior Gharana style with its unique Dhrupad classical form. Khayal was also refined from the Gwalior Gharana.

Most of them are the only mark for placing the idols of Tirthankaras (saints of Jainism), though there are some cells that were originally built for habitation.
According to inscriptions, between 1441 and 1474, they were excavated within a short span of about thirty-three years. A huge figure is 17 meters high,
